Chapter 4 – as fate was

Both knew they have to be back before Mr. and Mrs. Chen came back and be suspicious about them. They knew they have not much time left but both of them managed to sneak back with the help of Uncle Dong the house keeper. They had told him to wait for them.

Finally they reached the Chen mansion and poor Uncle Dong was waiting for the two ladies to be back. Upon seeing them, he immediately hurries them and told them to quickly enter the house. He had the feeling that both Master Chen and Madam Chen would be back soon…

Both managed to run into the house when they heard the car honking sound… upon hearing that, both girls immediately dashed into Shuen’s room.

Shuen pretend to lie on the bed reading some classic books while Qianlin was sitting at the chair talking to Shuen as she read.

Both heard Master Chen and Madam Chen voice and knew that they were nearby their room. Shuen was feeling scared but Qianlin came up to her and told her not to worry too much. As expected upon seeing that their daughter room light was still on, both of them enter the room.

Master Chen: Shuen, it is pretty late and you are still not sleeping yet? What happened to your hand?

Shuen: I hurt myself in the day when me and Qianlin want out to catch butterflies.

Madam Chen: dear, you have to be careful…

Shuen: yes mum.

Madam Chen: I thought you would be asleep but since you are not asleep yet, why don’t you come out to eat some cakes that I had brought back.

Master Chen: dear, you should know it is not good for girls to eat after this hour. It would make them fat….our daughter is not yet marry… who would want to marry a fat bride?

Shuen: stop teasing me….

Madam Chen: but our daughter is already engaged to someone already. So why should I worry about it?

Master Chen: so my dear daughter, do you want to eat it?

Shuen: no thank dad… I think I will give it a miss… I am
feeling tired and I think I going to bed…

Both parents: all right….

Both parents did not suspect where both Shuen and Qianlin went. On the other hand Kefeng enjoyed himself a lot today and really hope to meet this lady again. He was in his room thinking about it when Shaohan enter the room.

Shaohan: cousin Feng, what are you day dreaming about?
Kefeng: nothing….

Shaohan: the more you do not want to admit, I think you are thinking of that maiden that we met just now. I do admit she is pretty….and she seemed to come from a rich family….

Kefeng: I also agree she is very pretty….

Shaohan: don’t tell me, you take a liking to her?
Kefeng: I…..

He was about to say something when a maid ran into their room to call them out to eat….

Shuen knew that the time she could sneak out to meet him would be lesser and lesser. Her impending wedding to the Cheng’s family would be soon Once the time reach, she has to get ready to be marrying. She felt she had to plan something. She really did not want to marry that Cheng guy. What she want is to marry someone she love but her parents had repeatly tell her that as her parents, they have the right to choose who she should marry.

Qianlin knew that her young miss did not want to marry him either but what she can do to stop this wedding. As the day’s passes, more wedding gift filled the house. More or less, everything was ready for the wedding except Shuen who is not prepared for the wedding.

One afternoon Shuen was sitting in the garden when Qianlin ran excitedly to her.

Shuen: what is wrong Qianlin? Why are you so excited?

Qianlin: guess who I met just now?

Shuen: who?

Qianlin: I met both young master Wu and the guy who was with that lady…

Shuen: are you referring to that guy we met that day?

Qianlin: yeah…. He spoke to me and even asks me how you are and is your hand all right?

Shuen: he is a thoughtful guy and I also took a liking to him. If only my future spouse could be like him….

Qianlin: miss, don’t think about it already.

Shuen: I don’t believe I can’t change my fate….

Qianlin: by the way, they ask me whether you are free for tea the day after tomorrow.

Shuen: of course I am free but it is only how we are going to get out of the house without getting suspect. I feel bad for asking uncle Dong to help us.

Qianlin: beside him, I don’t think anyone would want to help us at all. They are afraid of angering Master Chen… you know your dad temper….

Both of them did not know how to solve the problem at all. Qianlin knew that her young miss really want to meet the young master too but what she could do, she could not think of any good idea for the two of them to sneak off.

Furthermore, the time that the young master set was in the afternoon and Master Chen and Madam Chen is always at home in the afternoon. As the day go past, Shuen could only sigh to her and tell herself that it is impossible for her to meet him anymore. How she wish that he could come to her house to talk to her….

Whenever Shuen saw her mum, she wanted to tell her mum about it and ask her whether she would let her go out to meet him but she was afraid. Furthermore, what excuse should she give to her mum so as not to arouse suspicious?
She was panic over this issue.

The day to meet the young master and his friends was only in 2 days time but poor Shuen still did not have any idea how to sneak out of her house to meet them. Just as she was telling herself that she should resign to fate, fate in a form of someone who she knew.

She was standing at her room window looking out when Qianlin came into her room.

Qianlin: young miss, Madam Chen would like you to go out to have tea and cake with her with a guest….

Shuen: who is that guest that my mum is entertaining….

Qianlin: it is a young man… and you know what, the man who is at our house, we know him too….

Shuen: how can this be possible?

Qianlin: really… I am not bluffing you….

Shuen: who is he?

Qianlin: he is the one with young master Wu Kefeng…

Shuen: you mean Chen Yiru?

Qianlin: yeah… that is the one… go and meet him now and your mum… I believe he know your mum and your dad very well… they seemed to be close and they quite like him.
Shuen: all right….

Shuen was wondering to herself, who exactly he was. Then it dawned to her, maybe he could be one of her mum distant relative son. As she approaches the table, she smiles to herself. Maybe he could get her out of this fix. Greeting her parents, she took a seat.

Upon taking a seat, her mother introduces her to Yiru. Both smile at each other and Yiru told Shuen mum that he met her in the market place before but he did not know that she was his mum’s god sister daughter. It was such a small world.
As they talk, suddenly Yiru asked his god mum whether he could bring Shuen out to meet his friend. He want to bring her out to socialize with other who was about the same age as her. Madam Chen did not see any wrong with it and even allowed him to do so…. Shuen knew what Yiru was up too when she saw him winking at her.

It seemed that it was the “first time” that Yiru saw Shuen at her place. In the past when he came to his god mum house, he seldom get to meet Shuen… either she would be busy with her school stuffs or she would not be at home thus he did not get to meet her at all. So today was the “first” time he saw her other then when she went to catch butterflies.

Seeing that both her daughter and her god son could communicate so well, she decided to leave both of them alone and ask her husband to follow her out for a walk.
Once both of them were left alone, both of them burst out laughing. Qianlin who was in the kitchen taking out some hot tea heard them laughing too. Coming up with hot tea, she pour it for them. Yiru told Qianlin to take a seat and chat with them too but Qianlin feel shy….

Yiru: Qianlin, take a seat too…

Qianlin: I am only a servant; I don’t think I am allowed to take a seat…

Yiru: Qianlin, to me we are all fair and square. I am a human and so are you. I don’t see why you can’t take a seat too….

Qianlin: thank a lot.

Shuen: just now about you telling my mum about going out to socialize with your friends? Is it real…?

Yiru: of course it is real… I knew about the meeting too… young master Wu would be going too and so is his cousin Shaohan….

Shuen: so by asking my mum, she did not suspect you at all…
.
Yiru: fear not, your mum dotes on me a lot and you won’t suspect me or you… I will make sure you will come back in one piece.

Shuen: thank a lot for your help. Earlier, I was wondering how could I go and meet your but now everything is solved… thank a lot….

Yiru: tell you a secret, I bet with my heart that young master Wu had taken a liking to you… whenever I talk about you, he would blush a lot….

Shuen: actually I do like him too….

Yiru: this is a good new….

Qianlin: but not for long, you see your god mum had engaged your god sister to the Cheng family already….

Yiru: I don’t believe in such engaged thing… rules are mend to be broken and it is only up to you whether you want to do it.

Qianlin: (laughing) are you corrupting her mind….

Shuen: don’t mind her and she too laugh…

The two days passed quickly and that late morning, Yiru came to the Chen mansion to wait for Shuen and Qianlin. Before they left, Madam Chen gave Shuen some money and also a box of cakes and told her to eat it when she is hungry… she even ask Yiru to take good care of his god sister….

This time round, Yiru brought everyone to quiet place which over look a man made fountain. Just by looking at it, one would feel relaxed. Kefeng and his cousin was already there waiting for them. Upon seeing them, they wave at them… when Kefeng saw Shuen, he blush again.
Laying the items on the mat they brought, they sat down and chat….

As both Kefeng and Shuen chat, they realized both of them have a lot of things in common such as their favorite food and hobby. Both even exchange ideas about how they could improve the quality of female and male.

In those day, sexism was high and male were always treated highly while female are taught to obey their husband and raise kids and females are even not allowed to study. Shuen was glad that she was allowed to study.

Suddenly Kefeng took Shuen hand

Shuen was shocked by his expression and look at him
wondering what he was up too.

Then Kefeng look up to her and spoke

Kefeng: Shuen, you are really a nice girl. I really hope to spend more time with you but I knew it would be hard for you to go out with me.

As he says that Yiru heard that and say it would not hard as Shuen was his god sister…

Hearing that, Kefeng was overjoyed.

Yiru: Shuen, I told you Kefeng really like you a lot… it is your fate and it is up to you to choose who you like and not marry someone you don’t like. I hope you get my drift.

Shuen: I get your point. I know what to do… there is still one more month to my wedding and I know what to do.

Time passes and everyone enjoyed themselves a lot and bid each other farewell. Before biding each other good bye, Kefeng went up to Shuen and told her that he hope to see her more often and Shuen reply back she would certainly come back to see him. Shuen did not know why but she accepts the hug that Kefeng gave her. Waving good bye, she left with Qianlin and Yiru.

Chapter 3 – am i falling for him?

Master Chen was in the garden drinking Chinese tea when he saw his wife walking to her room. Waving to her, he called her. Seeing her husband waving at her, she went to the garden and look for her husband.

Master Chen: so did you tell Shuen anything?

Shulin: I told her about the upcoming wedding to her.

Wangyi: so what did I precious daughter say?

Shulin: she did not look very pleased upon knowing what we have did for her.

Wangyi: so what did she say?

Shulin: she say she wanted to choose the person she like and not be match made to someone she did not like at all.

Wangyi: she must know that in this era, girls are not
supposed to question their parents plan for them to get marry. What we are doing are for their own good.

Shulin: but you should know how headstrong our daughter is, I am worry about this.

Wangyi: what happened next…

Shulin: she was silent for a while before she went to me and hold my hand and told me she will accept it but somehow I feel that something don’t seemed right. I just finger what it is… I just don’t feel at ease after she told me that… Shuen is my daughter and I know her character well… I am just worry…

Wangyi: lin, don’t worry so much… I believe our daughter would know that we care for her and appreciate what we do for her.

Shulin: I hope so….

*Chen /Wang Shulin is Shuen’s mother name
*Chen Wangyi is Shuen’s father name

But what both of them did not know that Shuen indeed have planned to do something else. Like what she says, she did not want to be control like a puppet. She wants to choose her life and the person she going to marry and not this way. She hates it.

Wu’s mansion
On the other hand, since Kefeng had came to visit his aunt and uncle, he had spend much time at their house and also spend much time with his cousin Shaohan… shaohan love Kefeng company and would pour a lot of matter to him and treat her cousin as her agony aunt and tell him about her feeling toward the guy she like.

Kefeng could see the cousin like this guy Yiru but he himself wonder how was this young chap? Was he good enough for his cousin? He wanted to make sure nothing go wrong. Cause if anything go wrong, he would be held responsibility for it.

One day Kefeng was in the garden reading a classic when Shaohan ran into the garden happily and also singing happily. Looking at his cousin, he wondered why she was so happy about. Seeing Kefeng there, she immediately rushed up to him.

Kefeng: my dear cousin, why are you so happy?

Shaohan: cousin Feng, you know what?

Kefeng: what?

Shaohan: he asks me out?

Kefeng: who?

Shaohan: Yiru ask me out. He want to bring me have a kite flying trip. I am just so elated…

Kefeng: I bet that tonight you would not be able to sleep.

Shaohan: stop teasing me because if you continue, I would blush….

Kefeng: you need not because you are blushing already.

Shaohan: KEFENG!!!!!

Kefeng: all right…. Wait a minutes, how are you going to go out of the house just like that? Your parents would be suspicious…

Shaohan: yeah… why did I not think of it…. I am dead….

Kefeng: ask for my help and I will help you…

Shaohan: thick skin….

Kefeng: without your help, I can guarantee you can’t go out of your house….

Shaohan: (give Kefeng those faces) please, help me… you are my best cousin in the world… I will buy you your favorite food…

Kefeng: really???

Shaohan: please… if you help me, I would….

Kefeng: I do not want anything but I want to see your
friend Yiru….are you able to do it?

Shaohan: ermmmmm…..

Kefeng: take it or leave it…

As he started to walk away, Shaohan rushed up to him and tell him that she agree to his term….

Smiling to herself, she ran back to her room.

Chen mansion

Shuen had waked up early and was in her room sewing some fabric when Qianlin came in.

Qianlin: what are you doing?

Shuen: I am just bored and decided to do some sewing…

Qianlin: today is such a bored day. Your mum and dad had gone to the next town to meet your cousin. I heard your cousin parents want to meet your parents to discuss something thus they went down. Before they left, they told me that we are to settle our lunch and dinner. They would be back before night fall. So this means we are free the whole day. I wonder what we should do.

Shuen: it seemed boring to me? Don’t you have any idea to made me happy and enjoy myself?

Qianlin: why don’t we go and fly some kites and also go and catch some butterfly at the nearby stream. I heard that the air is fresh there and it is a good place to relax too…
Shuen: seemed fun. Why don’t we pack some food there too and eat there and play there too.

Qianlin: all right….

Shuen did not know that Kefeng, Shaohan and Yiru were going there too.

Shuen and Kefeng cross path once again….
After packing the various cakes they have and also some food stuffs from outside, they left and also not forgetting to bring the kites and butterfly nets.
Singing happily and holding her young missy hand, they walked slowly to the venue that they wanted to spend there.

*Wu Mansion*

The night before, Shaohan could not even a wink as she was simply too excited thus when she woke up the next day, she look so dead and Kefeng still teasing her nonstop in which Shaohan kick Kefeng leg. Screaming in pain, he stares at her.

Once they finish their breakfast, Kefeng told his aunt and uncle that he would be bringing Shaohan for a reading trip with his friend and the friend was a childhood friend of them. Not suspecting anything, both his aunt and uncle let Kefeng and Shaohan leave.

So now both Kefeng and Shaohan were also going to the venue to meet Yiru…

The place was not far from Shuen and Qianlin place so after a 20 minutes’ walk, they had already reach the place and now was finding a place to sit down to enjoy the day.

Yiru on the other hand was already there waiting for Shaohan. When he saw Shaohan, he smile happily. Shaohan saw Yiru too and went forward to greet him. Yiru saw Kefeng and immediately asked him some question. It seemed that Yiru find Kefeng familiar but he just point a finger to think where he saw him before.

Shaohan: Yiru, why are you looking at my cousin? Is there anything wrong?

Yiru: I just find him familiar. Are you a scholar?

Shaohan: of course, my cousin is… he is very smart…

Kefeng: (taking his fan), he knocks Shaohan’s head.

Shaohan: what that for?

Kefeng: once must be modest….

Shaohan: but you are very smart…. My cousin is a scholar….

Kefeng: I think you must be referring to the government exam?

Yiru: yeah…. I took the exam and I passed with flying colour…

Kefeng: me too….

Yiru: what is your full name?

Kefeng: I am Wu Kefeng and what about you?

Yiru: I am Chen Yiru….

Kefeng: nice to meet you.

After eating some cakes that Qianlin had brought, Shuen told her that she wanted to wander around for a while and take a slow walk. As she walked, she started to sing her favorite song.

Singing and singing, soon she found herself surrounded by so many pink flowers. Looking at it, she dances around it.
On other hand, Kefeng did not want to be lamppost beside Shaohan and Yiru and he decided to wander around too.

As he was wandering around, he heard someone singing and decided to follow the sound. The voice was sweet and he wondered who the person was singing.

Walking and walking, he saw the back view of the maiden. He thought to himself, how pretty she looks.

Hiding himself, he keep looking at the maiden and observing her moves.

He wanted to approach the girl when suddenly the maiden trip on her long clothes.

Rushing up, he tries to break her fall
Instead she felt on top on him.

Shuen could feel her heart beating very fast and she could felt that her face getting redder and redder.

Kefeng realized it was the same maiden he met that time and he too felt his heart beating quick…

Both Shaohan and Yiru was wondering where was Kefeng
And Qianlin was also looking for their missy.
Just as they was about to give up, they saw Kefeng fan

Qianlin saw Shuen fan that was tie with a red ribbon
Rushing, all three of them saw Shuen on top on Kefeng.

Helping her missy up, she asked her whether she was hurt…
Shuen reply that she was not hurt since this young man had broke her fall.

Looking at him, she thanks him.

Looking at them, Yiru suddenly spoke up.

Yiru: Miss, are you alone with your maid?

Shuen: yeah, it only we two here.

Yiru: it is not safe for the two young maiden to be here. Why don’t you join us?

Qianlin: Is it all right?

Kefeng: it is better this way. It is safer….

Shuen: looking at Kefeng, she blush….

Going to the place where Yiru and Shaohan was, they sat there too.

Kefeng realized that Shuen’s hand was injured and decided to find some medical herb from the place and rub on to Shuen’s wound before tying it with his clean cotton clothes that he brought along.

Throughout the day, Shuen could feel herself feeling shy and her face was getting red and Kefeng even thought that she was sick but no, she was feeling shy and of course smitten by Kefeng handsome look.

Shuen did not know how to fly her kites well and Kefeng help her and guide her. Although halfway, Shuen kite got struck in a tree and could not be taken down. Kefeng climb up to take it down and teach her how to fly it. Both of them were enjoying themselves a lot.

Even Qianlin could see that her young missy was enjoying herself. They were smiling at each other and cheering each other as they took turn to fly the kite.

In her heart, Shuen was really happy and hope to come out with him again.

Shuen enjoy her day with the rest and told them that she looks forward to come here again. Yiru told them they should make this place the venue that they met.

After biding each other goodbye, they left before night fall. Both Shuen and Qianlin had to be back before Shuen parents came home.

Chapter 2: thinking of him, his look.

Day’s passes and Shuen was thinking of ways to get out of the house. She wanted to see that young man again. Qianlin knew that her young missy had intention to see the guy but what reason could they come up with.

After the tutor left, Shuen felt bored and did not know what to do. Standing and looking out her window, she grew bored too. Qianlin went up to Shuen and asked why not she plays the guzheng, and Chinese string instrument. It had been a long time since she last played it.

Qianlin: missy, you know you are talented in playing the guzheng so why not you play a tune for me.

Shuen: but then, I do not have the mood to play at all…

Qianlin: why don’t you think of that young man? I believe if you think of him, you would have the mood to play.

As Qianlin say that, Shuen blush and her face turned all red.

Calling a few of the servant to help her, Qianlin carry the guzheng to her young missy room and place it in front of her and asked her to play a tune for her.

As Shuen play, she did not want her mind started to wander and she find herself dreaming. Her hand was on the guzheng but her mind was not. It seemed that she find herself running around in a garden full of butterflies and was enjoying herself.

Qianlin wondered why was her young missy so relax when she was playing. Is there anything wrong with her? Why was she smiling when she was playing? At the start, her young missy was not even smiling but now her smile was getting widen and then Shuen stop and look at them.

Hearing her stop, Qianlin rush up and asked her what was wrong.

Qianlin: missy, why did you stop?

Shuen: I had finished playing it so I stop….anyway while I was playing, I thought of going to the garden to catch some butterflies.

Qianlin: catch some butterflies? Are you serious?

Shuen: I just feel like it….

Qianlin: you are weird…

As they were talking, Madam Chen came into Shuen room.

The moment she saw her mother, she went back to the chair and sat down. Shuen was wondering why her mum would suddenly come to her room. Looking at her, she asked her but her mum just looked at her and say some she would miss her when she is not at home.

She was wondering why her mum was telling her this. Then it dawned on her that what her maid had said was true. It seemed that her parents had arranged a match made marriage for her.

Shuen: mum can I ask you something?

Madam Chen: en, what do you want to ask mum?

Shuen: is it true that you are going to marry me off to someone?

Madam Chen: en, you are not young too. Any girl at your age is supposed to get marry. Look at your Shuting your cousin who is one younger then you is already married and a mother of one child.

Shuen: mum, you can’t compare me with other. I am I and she is she. You can’t do this to me.

Madam Chen: I am sorry my daughter but you still have to get marry.

Shuen: so I have no choice? Can’t we compromise?

Madam Chen: you know in this house, I do not have a say even I am your dad wife. You must know that what your father says is final.

It seemed that actually no one wanted to say that Shuen was going to get marry but now her own mum had say it out accidentally so now Shuen knew she was going to get marry but it is like she still don’t know who she is getting marry to.

Shuen: mum, can I don’t get marry?

Madam Chen: en, don’t talk rubbish. You never know what will happen? Maybe the other party may be a nice guy who loves you whole heartily.

Shuen: I am more interested in finding the right guy by myself and by my own feeling.

Madam Chen: en, you must know what we are doing is for your own good.

Shuen: (think to herself that she spoke) Mum, I understand you and I would accept this. Don’t worry about me.

Madam Chen: I am glad.

After her mum left, Shuen thought to herself. She really hates it. She did not want to be control like this. She wants to control her own life. Choose her own future and choose who she want to be and have the desired freedom she want. But why are those so hard for her? Why can’t she have what she wanted in life?

Thinking and thinking, she felt that she not going to go with what her parents want. She goes to break free from this. She wants to rule her life by herself and not the other way round which is being control like a puppet without any freedom.

As Shuen smile to herself, Qianlin somehow felt that her young missy was up to something. How come she is taking this so calmly? Should she be angry and frustrated with her parents why was she behaving like this?
Just as she expected, Shuen indeed have something up her sleeves.

On the other hand, Kefeng can’t forget the look of the maiden that smile at her. From the way she was dress, he conclude that she was from a respectable family and also a rich family. The fabric that was used for her dress was from the famous textile stall down the road. Only the rich and well known family would go down there to buy their fabric.

Kefeng had already reached his aunt house and he was welcome by his cousin Shaohan who was at the door waiting for him.

Upon seeing him, she screamed excitedly to her mum informing that cousin Feng had finally came to their house. Even his uncle was excited and came out to welcome him too.
Seeing them, he did not forget his manner and greeted them.

The 3 of them went up to him and help him with his stuffs and asked him to come into the house to take a rest. Dinner would be served soon. When his aunt left to go to cook, his cousin Han came forward to him.

Han: so cousin Feng, you want me to show you your room?
Feng: all right.

Showing him to the room, both of them started to chat.

Han: cousin Feng, it had been a long time since I last saw you and now you are so handsome. I am drooling when I look at you.

Feng: don’t joke about this. I am not this handsome.

Han: I don’t know why you are always saying that you are not. You are. Even I your cousin am smitten by you and you say you are not.

Feng: so during my absence did you do anything that I your cousin Feng did not know? Admit everything and you would be fine and if you did not, you would be sorry.

Han: cousin Feng, how could you tease me like this?

Looking at his cousin face, he knew she was hiding something from him. Patting her on her shoulder, he asked her again.

Feng: Han, tell me about this….

Han: silent…

Feng: don’t tell me you fell in love with your best friend….

Han: (shocked) how did you know that?

Feng: I am smart that all I can say…

Han: rubbish….

Feng: so you fell in love with your best friend Yiru right. But did he know you like him?

Han: I doubt so….I have been trying to tell him but it seemed I can’t … I don’t know why…

Feng: so did aunt know about it?

Han: no…. you better don’t tell them if not I am finished.

My mum and dad hate me having relationship at this age. You better not get me into trouble.

Feng: hahahahaha let me think about it…

Han: don’t be like this.

Seeing her shaking his hand and asking him not to tell, Feng decided not to tell his aunt and uncle about it but he told Han he wanted to meet Ru if possible.

So what is En going to plan?

What will happened when Feng meet Ru, his cousin best friend?

chapter 1: Cross path

~The First Generation~

As the leave fall from the tree, a young girl was standing outside the window looking. Who was this girl, one wondered? She had jet black long hair and she was wearing a Chinese Cheongsam.

The Chinese Cheongsam shows her hour glass figure. She was a beautiful girl that every guy would love to have her as their wife or even mistress but this lady was not even interested at all.

Every day without fail, this girl would stand outside the window looking at the people walking past the house. To her, it seemed interesting to her. In those days, to be able to go freely for a girl was not allowed. Even if she wants to be, she had to be followed by someone.

Just then a young maid came into the room and called her.
Turning to see what her maid wanted, she turned to her maid direction.

The young maiden was none other than Chen Shuen, the only daughter of Master Chen and his wife. Since young, Master Chen had employed the best tutor for his only daughter since his daughter was keen in studying.

In those days, girls were not even allowed to study. The most important thing that a girl should learn then would be to know how to sew embroidery and cook. All they are supposed to do are to wait to be marrying off.

But Miss Chen Shuen did not want this to happen to her. She wants to control her own life. She find to find her true love and not be let other control her love. Her mum had many time told her being born as a girl in those time, they have to resign to fate.

Male are forever superior then female and they are just taught to obey their husband. Women are just supposed to bear their husband kids and take care of the kids. It seemed after letting Shuen to study was a wrong mistake for her parents caused now she had her only mind and she was more “open minded” about what male and female could do. To her what a male could do, a female would be able to do so since both of them are human being.

En: Qian, what is wrong? Why are you in a hurry?

Qian: I do not know should I tell you?

En: Qian, just speak your mind.

Qian: just now when I was helping madam with work, I heard your dad talking about you being engaged to someone.

En: are you serious? Did you managed to hear who they were talking about?

Qian: I did not hear him mentioning any guy name.

En: I do not wish to be match made at all. I just want to find my true love

Qian: missy, don’t you think you are able to do so in this era?

En: if I try, maybe it would.

What En did not know what the person who had came to the Zheng mansion was a match maker. The opposite party who had sends the match maker was the Zheng family. The Zheng family had only one son and one daughter. For many years, his parents had find matches for their only son but their son was not least interested in it but then it was only this year that he give in to his mum nagging and agree to this match made. The party was Zheng Yuan Chang (Chang). Chang himself had many admirers too but he himself was more interested in his work other then marriage.

During the next few days, the match maker came again and asked whether Master Chen was agreeable to this marriage to the Zheng family but Master Chen told the match maker to give him more time to think about it.

Shuen dad was also a well known person in town. Her dad is a well known physician and many people from other village would come to seek him help in curing illness. Master Chen had been particular about the other party who is going to marry his daughter. After all Shuen was his only daughter. He have to made sure it is the best thing for his daughter if not the match is off.

Discussing with his wife, his wife too think it is a good match for Shuen but his wife too thought they should ask their daughter about it but Master Chen felt that there was not a need for her to ask his daughter about it since she had to obey them. Seeing she can’t fight with her husband, she gives in but her hope that Shuen would like the guy that they had matched made for her.

Both parties decided to give this marriage a low key affair and even both party who was going to get marry was not even told that they were going to be marry to each other. So Shuen did not know she was going to get marry. Even the preparation of wedding was done without her knowledge.

As unusual, the tutor would come to the Chen mansion to teach Shuen on the classics and teach her about the current affair in town. After each lesson, Shuen would then again stand and look outside her room window. She finds that she was like a prisoner who is being locked in the house. Although she was able to go out, she would have to be following like a prisoner. She does not have any freedom and space to herself at all.

Deep in her thought, her mum walk past the room wondering what was wrong with her daughter. Noticing footsteps, Shuen took the embroidery that she had hid under the bed. Taking it, she pretends to sew it.

Seeing her mum entering the room, she lie to her mum that she was short of some accessories and she would loved to go out to town to see some new accessories. Not suspecting anything, her mum told her maid Qianlin to follow her and assist her if possible. Giving her some cash, both girls went out of the house happily.

It had been long since Shuen had come out of her house. The previous time when she came out was when her mum had brought her out to shop for some ribbons and shoes for a performance. Other than that, Shuen did not come out of the house often.

Singing happily, she skips out of the house with Qianlin.
Shuen was wondering what she should do when she was out of the house.

Asking Qianlin, she too did not know at all.

Walking both saw beautiful shoes and dresses being sold and both girl was attracted to it and immediately rushed to the corner to look at it.

Thinking and looking for a while, Shuen brought the shoes and went further more to see more stuff.
Walking down some more, she was attracted by the aroma of the sweet soup stall. Pulling Qianlin hand, both rush to the stall to see what they have.

Seeing the different variety of the sweet soup, Shuen told Qianlin to order each different variety of soup. She wanted to try it. But when Qianlin wanted to order the last remaining black sesame paste soup, it was ordered by one young man who was in front of her.

Qianlin knew her young missy love to eat black sesame paste soup but now it was not available. Seeing what was available, she ordered peanut paste soup, almond paste soup and Ginkgo nut soup with sweet potato in it.

Although without the soup she wanted, Shuen still enjoyed her soup. She asked Qianlin which was the person who had last ordered the black sesame paste soup. Pointing to her the person, Shuen was attracted by this young man look. He seemed to be a scholar and on the table were some classic book and a fan too.

Finishing their soup, Qianlin told Shuen that they have to leave soon if not Madam Chen would be worry for her safety. Paying for the soup, both left to buy some stuffs as not to arouse suspicious about them going out. Both girl was singing happily and walking happily when it started to rain. Without an umbrella to shade them from the down pour, both girls rush to the five foot way of the shop houses to seek shelter.

Both girls were drenched to the toes and they were feeling very cold. Even the hair arrangement on Shuen’s hair now was destroyed and so was Qianlin too.

While waiting for the rain to end, suddenly they saw the same young man rushing to where they were to seek shelter too. Looking at him, Shuen smile at him. Noticing her smiling at him, he smiles back too.

When the rain stops, the young man left first. Shuen regretted not able to ask for his name but hope in her heart that she would be able to see this guy again.

Qianlin somehow felt that her young missy was smitten by this young man and she too wanted to know more about this young man but how are they going to find him again, both wondered. but what both did not know that fate somehow would pull them together and they would meet each other again.

When Shuen went home, her mum was waiting at the door for her. Her mum knew it was raining heavily and was worry that both girls would come back drenched. Just as she expected, both of them were wet. Madam Chen immediately rushed both girls to have a bathe before asking Shuen to go to the family hall to drink with them.

Shuen felt that something was not right. Why would her mum suddenly want her to go to the family hall to drink? Something is going too happened. Qianlin felt that master Chen was going to tell Shuen about the match made arrangement with the Zheng family. She wondered how Shuen would take to it although she knew bit and pieces about it already.

So who was the young man that both Shuen and Qianlin saw at the sweet soup stall and also at the five foot way. It was none other than Young Master Wu Kefeng. Kefeng is the only son of the Wu family. The Wu family had two sisters. Since young Kefeng was doted by both his parents and sisters.

What he wanted, both sisters and parents would definitely buy for him. Kefeng was smart since young and from age 3, he would follow his father around. His father was a teacher and he love to recite poem too. So Kefeng could recite poem very well.

To further add to his parent’s glory, he was intelligent in his studies and holds a good job too. Now he was in this town to find his aunt who is his father sister.
His two sisters had already got marry off to the next town and only came back during the Chinese new year.

His mum had been sickly for a long time had had passed away last winter. Now all he left was his father. His father was getting old and now his father would rarely go out of the house. Before his dad passed away, his father told Kefeng to go to the capital of China which is Beijing to find his aunt. That how Kefeng cross path with Shuen.

Shuen parents are staying in capital of China, Beijing.
